Visa cards are currently divided into 3 main types, suitable for the needs of customers. As follows:

Visa Debit Card (Visa debit card)

Visa Debit card is also known as Visa international debit card or Visa international payment card. This is a card that is linked directly to your payment account. You use the money available from the current account opened at the bank. Usage money is the amount of money you have in your bank account.

You can use Visa Debit card to perform functions such as withdrawal, payment when shopping, transfer… depending on your usage needs and the amount of money you have in your account.

Note, transactions can only be made with a value equal to or less than the amount you have in your account. For example, if you have 2 million VND in your account, you can only use less than this balance. To use more you need to deposit money into the account.

With this type of Visa Debit card, some banks will ask you to maintain a minimum amount in your account. There are also some banks that do not require this maintenance amount.

Visa Debit cards are accepted at ATMs with Visa symbols at home and abroad, POS machines that accept payments or make online payments. Especially, with Visa Debit card, the money in the account can be profitable monthly with interest rate without term.

Visa Credit Card (Visa credit card)

Visa Credit card is also known as Visa international credit card. This is a type of Visa card that the bank will grant the cardholder an amount according to the pre-agreed limit between the card issuer and the customer. Cardholders can use this money to make transactions such as: Payment for shopping, cash withdrawal…

By the payment deadline, the cardholder must return the used amount to the bank. Usually banks will waive interest for cardholders for a period of 45 – 60 days (depending on the type of card you open). If you pay the used amount within this period, no interest will be charged. After the interest-free period, if you do not fully refund the used amount, the amount will start to be charged interest.

Therefore, using money on a credit card is similar to a loan. The bank gives you a loan to spend first, then you pay it back to the bank at the specified time. That’s why credit cards are also known as “spend first – pay later” cards.

For Visa credit cards, interest will be applied in case of late payment or failure to pay off the outstanding balance of the previous period. In addition to the interest rate, there are some additional fees such as cash withdrawal fees, foreign currency conversion fees…

Visa Prepaid Card (Visa prepaid card)

Visa Prepaid card is also known as Visa prepaid card. This type of card has a similar usage method to Visa Debit card. The only difference between Visa Debit and Visa prepaid cards is that Visa Prepaid cards are not linked to a bank account. Customers can use prepaid cards to pay when shopping. Some banks issue Visa Prepaid cards but limit the two features of transferring and withdrawing money at ATM.

Prepaid Visa cards can be issued as physical or virtual cards (non-physical cards). Virtual Visa  card is a prepaid card but does not have a blank card. Currently, VPBank and Sacombank are typical banks that open virtual Visa cards. With this type of virtual Visa card, cardholders can still do normal banking thanks to the virtual bank card on the phone.

To better understand the characteristics of the above Visa cards, you can refer to the comparative data table below:

Steps to apply for a Visa card

When applying to open a regular Visa card, you will go through the following steps:

  • Step 1:  You bring your identity card to the bank branch/transaction office  where you want to open a Visa card
  • Step 2: Fill in the card opening registration form that the bank staff gives you
  • Step 3: Pay the necessary fees when opening the card. The bank approves the application and sets a date to pick up the card
